Luxembourgish has been spoken along the banks of the river Moselle for more than a thousand years and there are nearly 300,000 native speakers in the tiny European country.  It is one of the three official languages in Luxembourg, the two other being German and French.  It is the language of instruction in pre-school education, but in primary schools that shifts to German and changes again in senior secondary school to French.  This mixture of languages is apparent in many different aspects of everyday life.  Luxembourgish however thrives in local communities through theatre, music and the film industry.
