Macedonian is a language in the Eastern group of South Slavic languages and although it is an internationally recognized language, which is taught at several universities throughout the world, it is considered by many people to be merely a dialect of Bulgarian.  It is written in the Cyrillic alphabet with two additional letters not to be found in any other language.  There are about 2 million people who speak Macedonian throughout the world.  Macedonia, which used to be part of the former Yugoslavia, is a country known for its hospitality, rich cultural heritage and history and is the land of Alexander the Great.  It is a very diverse country, which has been influenced by its neighbors and this is reflected in its music.  Folk songs often tell stories about great heroes and warriors.  The most common instruments include the Gadja (bagpipe), the Supelka (small flute), the Cermane (three-stringed fiddle) and the tTpan (cylindrical drum).
