"FAMOUS COMPOSER GIACOMO
PUCCIN"
The composer of some of the world's best loved operas, Puccini's gifts
were primarily theatrical. He had a great feeling for the stage and the
sound of instrumental colors, combined with a well-developed melodic
sense.
Inspired by Verdi, he focused his attention on Italian dramatic
traditions. He won fame and fortune for Manon Lescaut and Le Boheme.
Tosca, Madame Butterfly and Turandot also achieved great success
and critical acclaim. La Fanciulla del West was written for the
Metropolitan Opera in New York, and was first presented there in 1910.

"FAMOUS COMPOSER GIUSEPPE
VERDI"
Verdi was the most important figure in the succession of 19th century
Italian opera composers. He led a dramatic life which included political
involvement and personal tragedy.
His life manifested itself in his work, highlights of which
included Nabucco, the opera that first brought him great success.
All his operas were indicative of the style for which he is famous,

characterization. His works are still among the most popular in the
international operatic repertoire. c1996.

Johannes Brahms.
Music Video.
DVD.

minutes.

"FAMOUS COMPOSER JOHANNES
BRAHMS"
Brahms was one of the seminal music figures of the 19th century. He
composed symphonies, concertos, and many songs, piano pieces, and
chamber works. Opera is the only major musical medium in which he did
not write.
More than any other composer of the second half of the 19th
century, Brahms was responsible for reviving what is termed "absolute"
music.
This describes compositions which were to be accepted on their own
terms as interplays of sound rather than as works that depict a scene or
tell a story. c1996.

"OPERA * MARIO LANZA ON DVD"

through the popular art of movies than anyone else.
His unique tenor voice was known to millions through such hit films
as The Great Caruso and The Toast of New Orleans, and on such
chart-topping records as "Be My Love".
The chubby "singing truck driver" from Philadelphia became a
Hollywood legend, only to be destroyed by his own excess. In a brief
tweleve years, Lanza went from being a star to an overeating has-been.
He died tragicaly at the age 38 alone and near penniless in a diet

Tosca.
Music Video.
DVD.

"OPERA * TOSCA ON DVD"
Eva Marton stars in this Opera Australia performance of Puccini's most
beloved opera also featuring Lamberto Furlan and John Shaw.
"Tosca" has been one of the world's most beloved operas since its
first performance on January 14th 1900. Based on a play by Sardou, the
opera ranges from tender love scenes to murderous rage.
The role of Tosca is one of the greatest tests of the soprano. For
the music and the dramatic demands this role places upon every prima
donna is perhaps unequaled in the entire operatic repertoire.
Eva Marton's Tosca is not merely a good, devout woman driven to
violence, but suggests a hidden tigress right from her jealous
accusations of Cavaradossi in the first act: this explodes in the second
act act where her stabbing of Scarpia is no moment of distraction but
the calculated culmination of her rising fury and desperation.
