This is an entertaining and informative travel guide describing Albania during
the communist era, when tourists were subjected to stringent regulations
but found a friendly, car-free country, and in the period which followed
when independent visitors were allowed to travel freely.
As Albania struggles to rebuild its infrastructure, this guide offers
fascinating insights and information on a country frequently in the
headlines.
About
Albania
Albania's breathtaking beauty is matched only by its amazing resilience.
Jagged peaks contrast with silver sand, torrential rivers with pristine
mountain lakes; stone houses cling to the hillsides and ancient ruins bask
under a southern sun. Albania's legacy is 2,000 years of invaders who left
Greek and Roman temples, Byzantine churches, Venetian bastions and Ottoman
fortresses.
About
the authors
Linda White is an American journalist who spent some time in Albania in
the 1990s and whose affection for the Albanian people led her to write her
own journal. Andrea and Peter Dawson's original journal was written
following a package tour to Albania in the early 80s when they were struck
by the changing landscape. Peter is a member of the Society of Watercolor
Artists, and his sketches appear in Albania.
Author's
comment
The beauty of the landscape is enhanced by the friendliness of the people.
Visitors are welcomed with inborn hospitality and a fair measure of
curiosity . The people have almost nothing but share everything with their
guests. To be a tourist now carries a great responsibility - to the
Albanians who offer their unquestioning friendship and to future tourists
who will be treated according to the way we act.
