Ecuador Handbook.
Footprint Travel Guides.
448 pages. Size 4¾”x8¼”.
Includes color photos and 190 maps.
The phrase 'small is beautiful' could have been coined
specifically with
Ecuador
in mind. By South American standards it is tiny (only half the size
of France) and dwarfed by its neighbors Colombia and Peru. But it is
this relative compactness which is one of its main tourist attractions.
If you've only got a few weeks in which to explore a place, you really
don't want to spend half your time in an aircraft or on a bus. Here,
you can watch dawn break over the jungle canopy, have lunch
high in the Andean mountains, then watch the sun slip into
the Pacific Ocean, all in the same day.
Special
features include:
Colour section on Galápagos wildlife.
Adventure tourism - climbing, trekking, rafting, kayaking.
Special feature on birdwatching.
Totally packed with up-to-date information including highlights
of virtually every town and site. Also
includes money-saving tips, advice on staying healthy, and anecdotes on
local history, culture, customs, and etiquette.
Indispensable!

Ecuador
Handbook

2nd edition - Julian Smith
$17.95
The
Ecuador Handbook
was written with a special focus on history, nature, and outdoor
recreation. The world-famous Galápagos Islands—where tortoises the size
of sofas, doe-eyed sea lions, and birds with bright blue feet roam free
and fearless in the middle of the Pacific—are given the full treatment,
including tour operators, in-depth natural history for the layperson,
human history (the work, life, and legacy of Charles Darwin), and tips on
visiting.
Ecuador's unique strength is that everything special in South America is
found within one of the continent's smallest countries, all within a day's
travel (even by bus). On one hand travelers can experience untouched
tracts of Amazon rainforest dotted with indigenous tribes and luxury eco-lodges,
and on the other an entire Pacific coastline with hidden beaches and
sparkling resort cities. Down the middle of the country runs the knobby
backbone of the Andes, where descendents of the Inca weave textiles and
trade in windswept markets like their ancestors have for centuries.
With treasures of colonial art and architecture
and 20,000-foot snow-capped volcanoes that can be climbed overnight for
next to nothing, Ecuador offers enough to keep the most jaded traveler
busy and fascinated for years. And an added bonus—it's one of the least
expensive countries for travelers in South America.
- Descriptions of
outdoor adventures, including backpacking, kayaking, and
mountain-climbing, and details on navigating the infamous Nariz del
Diablo on the roof of a train
- Discerning hotel and
restaurant reviews for every budget, from luxury rainforest lodges
to getting by on US$10 a day
- Extensive coverage of
the world-famous Galápagos Islands, including hints on finding the
right tour and where to swim with sea lions
- 44 detailed maps
covering major cities, national parks, the Galápagos, and more

Description
Truly the quintessential
South American experience, Ecuador has it all. From islands and mountains
to jungles and cities, the authors of The New Key to Ecuador and the Galápagos
have covered every corner of this country and included every important
travel detail in this impressive, up-to-date guide book.
On the mainland, it tours the colonial
capital of Quito, explores the highland villages along the "Avenue of
the Volcanoes" and takes travelers to the Otavalo Market, a renowned
Indian market that has served as the economic and social center of the
northern highlands for over 4000 years.
The New Key to Ecuador and the Galápagos
keeps the outdoor enthusiast on the path to adventure by listing
once-in-a-lifetime diving and snorkeling opportunities such as Devil's
Hole, an underwater volcanic cone home to huge schools of fish, sea
turtles and sleeping sharks. It includes unequaled coverage of the world's
largest rainforest, showing readers where to journey down an Amazonian
river on a floating riverboat hotel or watch Howler Monkeys from an
isolated jungle lodge.
Keeping the environment first and foremost,
the guide stresses the importance of enjoying the natural beauty of
Ecuador and the Galápagos islands without disturbing the fragile
ecosystems. The authors have added a "Green-Rating Survey" that
acknowledges lodgings making significant efforts toward sustainable
tourism. Pulling no punches, The New Key to Ecuador and the Galápagos
explains existing problems and possible solutions for the insured
continuation of a healthy jungle habitat.

Rob Rachowiecki, Mark Thurber and Betsy
Wagenhauser
Climbing and Hiking in Ecuador - 4th edition
288 pages / 46 maps
$19.95
Ecuador's
volcanoes are currently going through a turbulent phase, bringing added
drama to a visit to this small country which is already a climber's dream
in its variety of mountains and volcanoes. For the experienced climber,
the excitement of high-altitude ascents beckons, as well as some excellent
new routes. Hikers are equally well provided for, with trails varying from
high treks through snow to rainforest excursions, while for the less
ambitious, there are treks varying from several days along an old Inca
Trail to some splendid half-day hikes through national parks. Climbers and
hikers are further aided by the 46 maps and mountain profiles showing
climbing routes.
About
Ecuador
Ecuador
may be small, but its diversity of landscape offers an extraordinary range
of challenges to climbers and walkers alike. Snow-capped volcanoes rise up
from open páramo and dense rainforest leads to an unspoiled coastline.
And all this is within easy reach of the capital city, Quito.

About
the author
Rob
Rachowiecki lives in Tucson, Arizona, where he makes his living as a
writer and tour guide leader for South America. Mark Thurber is an
American geologist working in Ecuador as a tour leader and environmental
consultant. Betsy Wagenhauser is an experienced climber. She set up and
ran for several years the South American Explorers Club in Quito.
Author's
comment
Ecuador
offers an incredible diversity of scenery, wildlife and people. The
mountaineer and adventurous traveller have a choice of the ice-clad Andes,
tropical rainforest, mountain trails leading to Inca ruins and quiet
beaches; all these attractions lie within a day's journey of Quito, the
capital city. This accessibility makes Ecuador an attractive tour destination for
climbers and hikers of all abilities, and avoids the long approaches and
expedition planning often necessary in other high mountain ranges… Superb
mountain scenery is only one of Ecuador's attractions. It has some of the
best beaches in South America, colourful indigenous markets and plenty of
wildlife, especially birds. Come and see for yourself.
