Andreas Umbreit
Guide to Spitzbergen with Franz Josef Land &
Jan Mayen
2nd edition
224 pages / 13 maps
$17.95
-
Spitzbergen
(Svalbard), with the adjacent islands of Franz Josef Land and Jan Mayan,
is gradually beginning to welcome tourists, especially from expedition
cruise ships and those on wildlife trips seeking the ultimate Arctic
experience. Andreas Umbreit is the acknowledged expert on Spitzbergen and
describes not only all the tourist opportunities in the archipelago, but
the safety implications of travel in this environment and the region's
complex history.

About
Spitzbergen
Spitzbergen,
is as close as you can easily get to the North Pole. An archipelago lying
entirely within the Arctic Circle, Spitzbergen is one of the last areas of
original wilderness in Europe, inhabited by polar bears, reindeer and
arctic fox, and with 60% of its land covered by ice. Currently dependent
on mining, the islands are slowly opening up to tourism as an alternative
source of income for the tiny population.
About
the author
Andreas
Umbreit is a German tour operator specializing in Spitzbergen where he
spends every summer organizing trekking tour groups.
Author's
comment
One
of the special charms of Spitzbergen, as large as the Netherlands and
Belgium put together, is that it is for all intents and purposes an
uninhabited, original wilderness. With a population of around 2,800
concentrated in five small settlements, and about 1,500 visitors annually,
there is enough space in this vast area to be able to spend days, even
weeks, without meeting anyone at all. In this respect, as well as its
climate, it is unique in Europe.
