The climb to Balcony House has always been an arduous task and within the entire area of the Mesa Verde no other Indian pueblo settlement is as well preserved. The unique quality of its brickwork indicates the past presence of a highly developed community that probably lived here until the end of the 13th century. For several centuries the forty-five rooms of Balcony House remained unoccupied and the families who had formerly inhabited them, the Anasazi Indians, left without a trace. The buildings have managed to survive due to the dry climate, the inaccessibility of their location and the nature of the materials used in their construction. In contrast to the earlier culture of the Basket Weavers, discoveries from the Late Pueblo epoch indicate that the Anasazi had a strong sense of community and were not afraid to make contact with neighbouring tribes. The effect of these cultural exchanges is evident on the various images and patterns of their pottery. Protected by mighty rock walls in the midst of magnificent and untouched canyons, the remains of this fascinating Pueblo culture have managed to survive the passage of time.

For the primeval inhabitants of North America, this dark rock lanscape must have seemed to be a magical place and was probably something they did their best to avoid, but today it is a popular tourist attraction. In some sections, the canyon is up to 900 metres deep. The rock walls can be read like a geological history book and the single layers indicate the early chapters of earth's creation. The unspoiled landscape around the Black Canyon is an important habitat for many rare species such as the black bear and the puma. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a dark rock landscape that is not only unique but also provides a wonderful insight into the mysterious miracles of nature.

Canyonlands is a wild expanse of rock carved out by water and gravity, that has created a large number of bizarre formations located in the heart of the Colorado Plateau. Native American Indians, cowboys, river explorers and uranium miners were once the few who dared to traverse this untamed wilderness in southeast Utah. Established as a national park in 1964, the red terrain of Canyonlands covers 527 square miles between the Colorado River and the Green River. Canyonlands contains three distinct regions. To the north lies the 'Island in the Sky', to the west is 'The Maze' and to the east, 'The Needles'. The height difference between the rivers and the valleys can be as much as 1,500 metres, thus creating a dramatic and fascinating contrast of outstanding scenery. The remnants of ancient villages and petroglyphs created thousands of years ago are indications of prehistoric life in this region. The entire region is full of contrast and variation with geological formations, such as 'The Devil's Kitchen', 'The Angel's Arch', 'Elephant's Hill' and 'The Wooden Shoe' and vegetation that ranges from arid to lush. The silent realm of these momentous monuments will never cease to capture the imagination of all those who visit Canyonlands.

DVD . Global Treasures. 10 Minutes. All Regions. An architectural and historical gem lies hidden in the Mesa Verde National Park in the State of Colorado in the United States Of America. The dwellings that were built into the cliffs by the Anasazi Indians have given this place the name of, Cliff Palace. They were discovered in1888 by two cowboys who must have been amazed when they stumbled across these ancient and magnificent structures. During the 6th century the Anasazi settled on the Mesa Verde Plateau where they lived in caves and simple wooden shelters. They began by building their dwellings from loam bricks until, in the latter part of the 12th century, they created their cliff dwellings. The amazing dwellings amounted to entire villages located in the cliffs. The technical building abilities of the Anasazi Indians, although simple, were remarkable because although the buildings were constructed with sun-dried loam bricks and extremely primitive tools, they were able to build multi-storey buildings and small towers. Nearly 800 years have passed since the sudden and inexplicable disappearance and emigration of the Anasazi. Thankfully, their fascinating Cliff Palace dwellings in the Mesa Verde National Park have managed to survive the centuries.

On the western edge of the state of Colorado and close to the city of Grand Junction and the village of Fruita, is the Colorado National Monument, one of the most fascinating areas in the United States Of America. From the 23 mile long Rim Rock Drive, there is a magnificent view across the eroded rock walls of the mighty canyons. Fir, juniper and mahogany trees form the main vegetation on the high plateaus that are located above the sparsely covered canyons. The amazing rock walls plunge down almost 300 metres to the bottom of the dried out canyons below that are dominated by typical desert vegetation. Trees, fountains and sculptures adorn the street as well as horses and carriages. On Arapahoe Street close to 16th Street is the Daniels And Fisher Tower. In 1911 William Cooke Daniels ordered the construction of a bell tower above his shop. It resembled the Campanile of Venice and was designed to create a good degree of southern charm. Denver became a boomtown when the railroad arrived in 1870. The Native Indians were forced to make way for those arriving by railroad and who were attracted by the possibility of making an easy buck. This once lively village has now developed into a modern city and the former trading arenas for fur, gold and silver have now been replaced by a skyline of glittering skyscrapers!

Various spectacular vantage points are located along the park's winding road, such as that of Park Point, which at 2,613 metres above sea level, is the highest section of the park and makes the panoramic view across the extensive desert foothills of the Rocky Mountains seems almost endless. Unlike most national parks in North America, and despite the magnificent rock and stone formations of the region, the observation of nature is not the main reason that most people visit the park, as the Mesa Verde is where the origins of an advanced North American civilization are to be found. The oldest traces of this region's human habitation date back almost 12,000 years when for several centuries, the Native Indians lived on top of the high plateau. At that time, the Indians possessed no building skills, thus the Anasazi Indians lived within large, natural caves. Created and inhabited by the Anasazi, the impressive cliff dwellings of Spruce Tree House were most likely established in the 12th century. Steep cliffs still show traces of climbing, the ancient paths of the Anasazi and ceremonial buildings, such as the Sun Temple, were most likely the result of amicable communication between the neighboring villagers of the canyons. Square Tower House, at Navajo Canyon, was probably built between 1200 and 1300 A.D., during the latter period of the Anasazi civilization. The highest vantage point of this settlement is situated close to the main road. With a total of 80 rooms and seven ceremonial areas known as Kivas, this is one of the region's most remarkable cliff dwellings. Although the Anasazi civilization that once lived among the canyons of Colorado were forgotten for many years, they now enchant and fascinate people from around the world. Compared to other national parks in North America, the Mesa Verde unites the beauty of nature with the unique remnants of a remarkable period of human history.
