Rick Steves'
Great Britain
- Travel Video. 5 Shows.
DVD.
Five
Shows: This DVD contains five
complete "Rick Steves' Europe" TV shows on Britain, first broadcast from
2000-2005 — plus bonus behind-the-scenes footage.
Running
Time: 2½+ hours. Closed
Captioned. NTSC format, all region compatible.
Join host Rick Steves on a lively 2½-hour
romp through Britain in five half-hour “Rick Steves’ Europe” TV shows.
You’ll spend an hour in London, covering the greatest of the old sights
(St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower), and
some
exciting new ones (the British Library and Millennium Bridge). Then
you’ll cover England’s salty south coast from Dover to Land’s End — and
the hilly southwest, from the charming Cotswold villages to the rugged
beauty of Wales. Up north in Scotland we’ll toss a log, sip some whisky
and sail to a sacred island. As a bonus, Rick reveals behind-the-scenes
footage and stories about his TV series.
London:
Royal and Rambunctious: We whisper secrets across the dome of St. Paul's
Cathedral and eat our way through Soho. Then we check out the treasures
of the new British Library, roll with the drums at the Changing of the
Guard, and cruise the Thames to Kew Gardens.
London:
Mod and Trad: We check out the
new — the Millennium Bridge and the British Museum's Great Court, and
admire the old — well-wrapped mummies and a rare Leonardo.
After bantering with
Beefeaters at the Tower of London, we do some riverside beach-combing
along the Thames, from the Tate Modern to the dizzying London Eye.
South
England: Dover to Lands' End:
From the white cliffs of Dover to Land's End, we ponder Roman, Norman,
and threatened Nazi invasions. After exploring Admiral Nelson's
flagship, we chase wild ponies and discover an ancient stone circle. For
refreshment, it's cream tea and Cornish pasties.
Heart
of England and South Wales:
After King Arthur country at Glastonbury, we go back in time to
prehistoric Stonehenge. We sample hard apple cider in Wells, meet an
eccentric lord in the Cotswolds, and visit an evocative ruined abbey in
South Wales.
Scotland's
Islands and Highlands: In
Scotland, legends of Bonnie Prince Charlie swirl with pipers and kilts
around crumbling castles. After tossing a caber (log) at a Scottish clan
gathering, we remember Highland massacres. We play hide-and-seek with
the Loch Ness Monster, tour a whisky distillery, and take a ferry to
sacred Iona.
Behind
the Scenes: Rick reveals
behind-the-scenes footage and stories about his TV series.

Great
Britain's Express Steam Locomotives - Travel Video. VHS. 5 Volume Boxed
Gift Set. Goldhil Home Media.
Many believe that the zenith of worldwide
railroading occurred in Great Britain during the "golden age" of steam
locomotives between 1930 and 1960. The railways developed an
astonishing variety of
engines
and they pulled the fastest and most powerful trains of the time.
These great passenger "Express" trains remain among the most famous in
history and they continue to be a favorite memory of British railroading.
This remarkable video series chronicles the amazing variety, speed and
power of the passenger express steam locomotives of Great Britain.
Their story is told with archival footage and with recent film of their
increasingly popular special excursions. Along the way, viewers will
experience the wonderful history of Great Britain's four major railways
both before and after they were nationalized into British Railways in
1948.
British Railways
When nationalized in 1948, the four
great British railways became British Railways. The new organization
inherited a substantial stock of locomotives, however, it was still
necessary to replace many worn-out and obsolete machines before the
change-over to diesels could take place. BR developed a range of
"standard" locomotives the first of which "Britannia" rolled out in 1951.
These were the last of the great British Express steam locomotives.
Although they were state-of-the-art, they would soon be replaced by the
more efficient diesels. Nevertheless, they live on with their
restored brethren as reminders of the Golden Age of British and world
railroading.
Great Western Railway
The G.W.R. ran many popular Expresses,
none more so tan the "Cornish Riviera Express," which carried vacationers
to the resorts in Devon and Cornwall. This and other trains were
powered by a wide variety of locomotives. Each engine class bore
special names, from the legendary "City of Truro," the first 100 mph steam
locomotive, to the "Castles," "Halls" and "Manors." But to this day,
the most popular locomotives of British railroading remain the magnificent
"King" class. Many of these great locomotives still operate to the
delight of railroad enthusiasts from around the world.
London and North Eastern Railway
The L.N.E.R. ran some of the most famous
trains in the world, and the locomotives which hauled them became railroad
legends in their own right. The "Flying Scotsman" was perhaps the
most famous of all and was powered by the giant engines favored by the
railway. The streamlined "A4" Pacifics developed by Sit Nigel
Gresley were incredibly popular and one, the "Mallard," was the fastest
steam locomotive ever, reaching 126 mph. Luckily, many of the best
engines remain in operating condition thanks to the National Railway
Museum.
London, Midland and Scottish Railway
The L.M.S. was the largest of Britain's
railways and served cities from the South Coast to the top of Scotland.
It ran many famous expresses, including the "Royal Scot," "The Caledonian"
and the "Pines Express." To haul these trains the L.M.S. built some
of the most powerful locomotives of all. The Pacific style engines of the
"Duchess," "Princess Royals," "Jubilees" and "Black 5" classes were
incredible machines and were very popular with the traveling public.
The last steam locomotives were out of service by 1968, but many of these
powerful engines are still enjoyed today on special trips.
Southern Railway
The Southern Railway ran many famous
Express trains such as the "Golden Arrow," "Atlantic Coast Express" and
"Bournemouth Belle." Their locomotives were equally popular and are
noted for their unusual design features, such as slab-side "air-smoothed"
casings. The names of the engines gave them a romantic air, since
many bore names associated with Britain's history, like the Knights of the
Round Table class. As with locomotives from the other great British
railways, many are lovingly maintained to the delight of rail and history
fans from all over. 275 minutes ( 4 Hours, 35 minutes ) |
