Ring of Fire:
An Indonesian Odyssey
- The
Ten Year Voyage of Brothers Lorne and Lawrence Blair - Travel Video.
Mystic Fire. Boxed set of 4 Videos,
DVD.

Originally seen by millions of public
television viewers, this exciting series documents the ten-year voyage of
two filmmakers, brothers Lorne and Lawrence Blair,
through the world's
largest and least known archipelago - the exotic, mysterious islands of
Indonesia. These islands form a chain of active volcanoes that arc down
and around into the Pacific to form the 'Ring of Fire.' 4 Hours.
The
Blair Brothers sailed with pirates aboard their black-sailed schooners in
search of the Bird of Paradise, struggled through rapids and deep jungles
searching for elusive nomadic tribes, witnessed veiled forms of human
sacrifice and found themselves drawn into ten years of danger and
discovery in a magical land where ancient myths still flourish. Their
intimate encounters with the vanishing masters of tribal wisdom were to
lead them from a physical adventure, into a deeper, more personal quest of
self-discovery.
"An
absolutely fabulous video series."
AL

THE SPICE ISLANDS: Following in the
footsteps
of the great 19th Century
naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace, the Blair Brothers embark with the
piratical Bugis tribe on a 2000 mile journey through the Spice Islands in
search of the golden-tailed Bird of Paradise, the symbol of Eternal Life.
Aboard a black-sailed schooner they encounter storms and doldrums, sultans
and transvestite priests, pearl-divers and python-hunters, before finally
reaching the Aru Islands, close to New Guinea. Their odyssey with
the Bugis tribe (who gave the word 'bogeyman' to the English language)
starts the Blairs on the inner journey which leads them ever deeper into
the forgotten wisdom of the island peoples.

The Blairs sail to Komodo and film the giant, carnivorous lizards of the island
whose tiny human population is descended from the people banished by the neighboring sultans of Bima to eke out their living on "Dragon Island."
On the island of Sumba, they witness a veiled form of human sacrifice by
equestrian warriors.
Master weavers of magical textiles, the Sumbanese still live by ancient beliefs, ritually keeping the balance
between the "Merapu" gods of the sky above and "Nyali," the Sea Goddess of
the world below. The brothers journey 50,000 years into the past to live
with Asmat headhunters in New Guinea. They eventually reach Bali
where they build a home in a village of farmers, artists and mystics.

In the shadow of Java's constantly erupting
volcanoes,
the Blairs descend from the crater of the newly erupted "Child of
Krakatoa" and encounter a world of medieval courts, mystical shadow
puppet plays, forgers of magical swords, healers with supernatural
powers and whole communities ruled by the powerful "Spirit of the South
Seas."
Back in Bali, they meet such sages as the master artist Nyoman Lempad, who was to die a conscious death on the day of his
choosing at the age of 116. And among the Toraja people of the
Celebes highlands, they share in the massive funeral rites of the last
king of the tribe which believes its ancestors came from the stars in
sky ships.

For eight-hundred miles, through
untamed
and uncharted rainforest, the
Blairs seek the last of the nomadic Punan Dyaks, the free-roving masters
of the interior, the "dream wandering" tribe believed to no longer exist.
The brothers struggle inwards, plagued by torrential rain, quicksand,
leaches and virulent insects. Eventually, they find and live with
the Punan Dyaks where they are initiated into the spiritual mysteries of
the "dream wanderers."
Lorne and Lawrence join the dance of the
hornbill and get tattooed with the symbol of "Aping" - the Tree of All
Life. This, their shaman explains to them, they will now bear,
wherever they may get to amongst the tribes of man, as a reminder that all
life forms are part of a single tree.

Prambanan Java, Indonesia
-
Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
Indonesia’s largest Hindu
holy place is
Prambanan,
in Central Java, a religious treasure that dates back to the 9th century
and originally included 232 temples. An earthquake struck and for many
centuries the buildings lay buried beneath the ground until, in1918,
archaeologists began to reconstruct the main temples.
The individual sections of the Candi Lorojongrang were rebuilt like
pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, which made the reconstruction process
particularly laborious, but in 1953 the rebuilding of the central
temples was completed.
The Candi Siva Temple rises 47 metres into the sky and is the tallest in
Prambanan and contains four inner chambers that face the four points of
the compass. The main Hindu god, Shiva, is depicted in the southern
chamber, whilst the sculpture of his reborn wife, Durga, is located
within the temple’s northern chamber.
Thankfully, due to the hard work and determination of many
archaeologists, the symbolic meaning of the old Hindu god, Shiva, God of
Destruction and Renewal, is well on its way to being fully realised.

Bali:
A Life in the Balance - Travel Video. VHS/NTSC. Encounter Video.
Plain and simple, Bali spells magic. The
magic of rich cultural traditions practiced by a people who really believe
in them. Here is life at its most expressive, with festivals,
ceremonies, dancers, craftsmen and artisans in abundance. One
can
innocently become wrapped
up in a temple festival, a procession, a noisy wedding party or an
exuberant cremation almost by chance. And behind this rich tapestry
of religious expression stand a friendly and outgoing people who welcome
your participating and companionship.
Where is
Bali? Somewhere in the South Pacific? Most think it is, but Bali is
in Indonesia, over 5500 miles from Tahiti! The relaxed rhythms of
perennial rice growing have afforded the people ample leisure time to
perfect an intricate Hindu-influenced way of live seen nowhere else in the
world. In Bali, every living moment is a sacrament to the millions
of good and evil Gods who reside in every niche and corner of this tiny
island state.
Bali is not a
primitive culture or a lost world. Some would say it is overrun with
tourists desiring to surf its legendary waters or climb its holy
mountains. Others come for spiritual adventure, immersing themselves
in Bali’s enigmatic religious life. Somehow, the island’s culture
has managed to absorb huge doses of Western influence without being
absorbed in the process. One wonders how long this can continue.
The secret of
the Balinese lies in the concept of balance on the physical, emotional and
spiritual plane. Today that balance has grown ever so fragile and
may soon disappear. Join Rick Ray as he explores “Bali: Life in the

Sundae
- Travel Video. DVD.
Cosmos Global Documentaries.
52 Minutes.
Active volcanoes and
creatures reminiscent of the dinosaurs, the tiny Sundae Islands are like
something from a bygone age. Indeed, this group
of islands situated east
of the Indonesian island of Java remained undiscovered for a surprising
number of years.
The village of Lamalera is situated in the south of the island, an area
that has little fertile land that is suitable for agriculture. The
people depend entirely on fishing and they are renowned for the fact
that they are the last whale hunters of the subtropics that continue to
hunt with harpoons and the first records of the region’s stout-hearted
whale hunters date back to the seventeenth century.
Due to the development of more accurate and lethal weapons, plus well
organised ships, some species of whale are now almost extinct. But on
the island of Lembata the people do not hunt the whale for commercial
reasons but because it is the basis of their survival as the lava stone
on the island makes agriculture almost impossible.
The oil that was produced by the whale fat was once an important fuel
and was used to illuminate entire cities! The gut of a sperm whale
contains a valuable substance, ambra. Up to four hundred kilograms of
this have been found in a single sperm whale and it was once used for
the production of perfume, although fresh ambra has an unpleasant smell.
The constant battle with the sharks and sperm whales off the coast of
Lembatas is not without risk but the men have no choice for there is no
other way of hunting in this region. They continue the heritage of their
legendary ancestors and age old traditions are still held in high esteem
in this extraordinary village.
The active volcanoes and legendary lizards of Komodo as well as the
existence of the courageous whale hunters of the Sunda are truly
evocative of a colourful and dramatic bygone age.

Dani
- Travel Video. DVD.
Cosmos Global Documentaries.
52 Minutes.
New Guinea
is situated close to the former Irian Jay that is now known as West
Papua. It seems to be a hidden place, as though the land itself wants to
retain its age old mystique. It was only in the 1930’s that
American
millionaire, Richard Archibold, discovered this until then unknown and
untouched world.
The Baliem Valley is not only West Papua’s high valley it is also the
home of a unique indigenous people, the Dani. In the dense and virtually
impenetrable forest regions of the Baliem Valley and its surrounding
highlands there are numerous tribes but it is the Dani who are the most
populated tribe of the region.
At the beginning of the 1980’s Wamena was only a small village occupied
by the Dani. However, the regular air service to New Guinea’s main
harbour and capital city has now speeded up its development. Cement,
corrugated iron and motor vehicles have since been flown into the
rapidly expanding city. Today, Wamena has a population of around twelve
thousand.
The most striking and characteristic attire of the men is a tubular
phalocrypt, or penis covering, made of dried gourd that in the language
of the Dani is known as a ‘koteka’. Most of their traditional dress
consists of magnificent feathers and plants and a strip of material worn
around their neck is meant to protect them from evil spirits.
Despite the discovery of their existence in the twentieth century the
simple lifestyle of the Dani of West Papua continues to be intriguing,
mysterious and totally fascinating.
