Paris City Guide 2 - Travel Video DVD.  Globe Trekker Video.

In this second look at the city of light, love and culture Globe Trekkers Adela Ucar and Justine Shapiro spend a week enjoying the museums, romance, food and entertainment of Paris.
With two very different perspectives on the city, Paris City Guide 2 shows the range of experience a trip to Paris can offer.

Adela’s adventure begins with a motorcycle taxi to her hotel in Montmartre and a stroll around the art filled neighborhood.
Justine’s begins with a visit to the Luxembourg Gardens and a ride on the best local/sightseeing bus in the world.

The next day Adela visits the Musee D’Orsay to learn about the paintings of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, while Justine finds some art of her own in a local street performance.
As no visit to Paris would be complete without a little shopping, Adela visits one of the city’s most unique stores, Deyrolle, famous for its one of a kind taxidermy.
Justine visits a street market in the African quarter with equally exotic goods on offer.

As for fashion, Adela is lucky enough to visit with renowned British designer Vivenne Westwood backstage during Paris Fashion Week. The last part of her trip is dedicated to another famous fashionista, Marie Antoinette.
First, she visits the stunning Palace of Versailles taking in Le Petit Hameau, the queen’s peasant village and then with a guide she revisits Marie Antoinette’s journey to the guillotine, from La Conciergerie to the Place de la Concorde.

With the week drawing to an end, both Justine and Adela have one thing they just have to see before going home. For Adela it is the iconic Eiffel Tower and for Justine it is the somewhat smaller but just as iconic Mona Lisa.  60 minutes.

Paris - Travel Video.  DVD.  Vista Point.  26 Minutes.

Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. First established by the Celts, next used strategically by the Romans, then it served the extravagant lifestyle of the Sun King, Louis the Fourteenth until it became a hotbed of Revolution.

Les Champs Elysees is surely one of the most beautiful avenues in the world. With wide boulevards, shady corners, ambient street cafes and classic Parisian buildings that are decorated with flowers.

Since 1873, the Palais De L`Elysee has been the residence of the French President. At the beginning of the 17th century, Madame De Pompadour lived there and during the Revolution the liberated people cavorted in its luxurious rooms.

Through a small triumphal arch decorated with scenes of Napoleon’s victorious army, there is the garden created by Leotre, the Jardin Des Tuileries. A bridge and a fountain are the focal points of this popular park created in typical French style.

A modern glass pyramid and a fountain decorate the courtyard of the former Louvre Palace, which since the time of the Revolution has been transformed into a museum that contains the famous Louvre art gallery. Its collection of remarkable historic treasures and superb art collection make it one of the world’s most famous museums. with Leonardo Da Vinci´s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, taking pride of place.

Situated on a small island on the River Seine is the Cathedral Of Notre Dame, the ‘Mother Church Of The Nation’. Built on the foundations of a Roman temple and commissioned by the bishops Maurice and Eudes De Sully, it took almost 200 years to build this Gothic masterpiece.

Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre’s Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace with 237 steps that lead up to the main entrance of this extraordinary structure. Its Byzantine architecture and five cupolas are reminiscent of the Marcus Dome in Venice.

Of course, there are the dizzy heights of the Eiffel Tower and a great deal more. Paris is a wonderful festival of the senses!

Napoleon's Tomb (Dome Des Invalides) - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
The Hôtel Des Invalides was built by King Louis The Fourteenth as a home for soldiers who had been wounded in action.

Following completion of the first building construction began on the equally impressive, Dome Des Invalides. Since then the Hôtel Des Invalides has replaced its injured soldiers with a military exhibition: today part of the Hôtel contains one of the most important museum’s of military history in the world.

Napoleon would most likely have approved the Musée De Lármée, today’s Army Museum. It contains around forty thousand exhibits including a large number of valuable weapons and armour. The collection also comprises numerous objects that date from ancient times to the present day.

The crypt of the Dome Des Invalides was specially redesigned and embellished by famous architect, Visconti, in order that it would be suitable to house the final remains of the once all-powerful Napoleon Bonaparte. Twelve great goddesses of victory, who symbolised the French people, surround his sarcophagus of Finnish porphyr that lies within the crypt.

Notre Dame - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
It is believed that the origin of the richly decorated Episcopal cathedral of Notre Dame dates back to the time of Bishop Maurice De Sully in 1163. But the majority of the cathedral’s present day architecture with its strange and fantastic creatures of ancient mythology, such as the chimeras, was designed in the 19th century.

The church owes much of its fame to the famous French author, Victor Hugo and his book The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, a great classic of French literature. The stone chimeras are reminiscent of the book’s main character, Quasimodo.

The remarkable and beautifully designed rose windows in the transept are particularly noteworthy as each is original and dates back to 1270 A.D.

In 1804 Napoléon Bonaparte was crowned emperor in Notre Dame by Pope Pius The Seventh on this famous island on the River Seine, the Ile De La Cité.

For the French nation the historic importance of this impressive monument is inestimable.

Paris "Vieux Ville" (Old City) - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
The history of the Louvre Palace dates back to 1200 A.D., when Philipp August built a fortress close to the river. Today, a modern glass pyramid decorates the courtyard of the former royal residence which, since the time of the Revolution, has been transformed into a museum that also contains one of the world’s most famous art galleries.

In 1670, Louis the Fourteenth founded the Hotel Des Invalides, a unique charity for soldiers that had been wounded during battle and a home for those who had previously been forced to live as beggars. The adjoining domed Cathedral of the Invalids is a masterpiece of Baroque Classicism, and it contains the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Cathedral Of Notre Dame, a Gothic masterpiece, that is also referred to as the ‘Mother Church of the Nation’, was built on the foundations of a Roman temple and took almost 200 years to build. Kings, monsters and grotesque figures populate its façades, and bizarre gargoyle-like creatures peer down from above. This is where the kings and queens of France were crowned and where Napoleon crowned himself!

Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre’s Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace and boasts 237 steps that lead up to its main entrance. Similar to the Marcus Cathedral in Venice and the Saint Front in southwest France, it was built in Byzantine style with 5 domes. Its interior is richly decorated throughout with reliefs, paintings and mosaics that are overshadowed by its exquisite architecture.

This is still one of the world’s most beautiful cities. First discovered by the Celts, then used strategically by the Romans, Paris is a city of passion and history that contains more than its fair share of irresistible charm!

Sacre Coeur - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
The shining white basilica of Sacré-Coeur towers above Montmartre and across the famous Parisienne art district of the same name. It is located on a hill that is thirty metres high and provides a good view of both Paris and the River Seine.

The magnificent basilica on top of Montmartre Hill can be seen for miles and is synonymous with Paris. Beneath Sacré Coeur is the former winegrowers´ village of Montmartre that, at the end of the 19th century, attracted several important artists. Montmartre’s exotic nightlife also gave it a special appeal and venues such as the Moulin Rouge have become world famous.

Despite the district’s commercial aspects even today Montmartre possesses its own unique charm and a good measure of the atmosphere of bygone times.

Even at night Sacré Coeur dominates the skyline above Paris’ vast ocean of colourful lights and thus confirms it to be one of the most striking and best known landmarks in Europe.

9.

Versailles (Chateau De Versailles) - Travel Video.  DVDGlobal Treasures.  10 Minutes.
Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French ‘Sun King’, Louis the Fourteenth. The history of Versailles covers the rise and fall of the Bourbons whose reign covered the most remarkable period of French history. Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.

Magnificent fountains decorate the palace’s huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor's art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park’s many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days.

Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people!

Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king’s creative ideas that Lebrun realized in exemplary style.

Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence.
