The Soviet Circus - Travel Video. National Geographic. Go behind the scenes at Moscow's Circus
School and experience the magic and wonder of the performances that
delight millions. See lion tamers risk life and limb, trapeze
artists glide through the air, and, of
course,
the beloved clowns who inspire imagination and fantasy, with laughter as
their language.
In the late 1980s, National
Geographic used its considerable clout to slip behind the scenes at the
venerable Soviet Circus, whose performances have been treated in their
home country as an art form on par with the symphonies of Tchaikovsky or
the plays of Chekhov. The resulting video is a documentary delight.
We are treated to scenes of "classwork," the elite school that
aspiring performers must attend, where they are taught a complement of
ballet,
acrobatics, rope-walking, and clowning. Their graduation
ceremony is a spectacular performance in front of a full audience.
We also meet some of the singular individual performers: the
legendary clown Popov, who says Chaplin inspired his sweet simpleton
persona, and who continues to be a juggling and slack-wire master more
than 40 years into his career; a big-cat trainer who decides to allow his
eager 9-year-old son into the ring for the first time to learn his
father's skills; and the acrobatic troupe the Cranes, whose
three-dimensional trapeze work evokes the birds of their name--and whose
grace seems on par with nothing short of the Bolshoi. 60 minutes |

Russia's Last Czar - Travel Video. National Geographic.
Enter the World of the doomed
Romanovs. It is a fairy tale and a horror story all at once, and
remembering it was all but forbidden...until now. The fabled
Romanovs, led by handsome Nicholas II and the devout Empress Alexandra,
ruled imperial Russia in high splendor, despite the
disintegration
of their divided, war-torn country.
In 1918, the rise of communism violently collided with the rule of
royalty when the tsar, his beloved wife, and their children were murdered
and buried in a secret grave. In the new Soviet Union, history was
rewritten and the gilded trappings of the Romanovs erased.
National Geographic has
done its usual highly professional job with this visual account of Czar
Nicholas II and his czarina, Alexandra. It features a good deal of
interesting newsreel footage of the epoch and a lot of affecting snapshots
of their family. Many of the candid snapshots were taken by the czar
himself or his daughter, Anastasia. The narration, by the
distinguished British actor Jeremy Irons, is quietly effective, although
somewhat melancholy in tone.
The story of the brutal murder of the imperial family by a Bolshevik
firing squad in Ekaterinburg is appropriately shocking. Although the
film devotes considerable attention to the controversial identification of
the family's remains, it was made in 1995 so it naturally doesn't extend
to their eventual burial back in St. Petersburg. 60 minutes |

Tigers Of The Snow - Travel Video. National Geographic.
Blake's words "Tyger, tyger burning bright"
come alive in this lush documentary from National Geographic. Tigers
of the Snow spotlights the Siberian Tiger, which once roamed over the wide
ranges of northern Asia but now is limited to a tiny region on the Sea of
Japan.
Footage
of their active muscles, their piercing eyes, their regal pelt, all attest
to the beauty of a dying breed.
Venture into the dense forests of coastal
Siberia to track the biggest cat on earth, the elusive Siberian Tiger.
You'll join a team of Russian and American scientists who are risking
their lives to save this highly endangered and highly dangerous creature.
Some 300 Siberian tigers survive in the wild, concentrated in a shrinking
habitat and under siege from poachers. Against incredible odds, this
daring band of wildlife biologists is determined to help the Siberian
tiger fight back.
Watch as researchers hastily
enter a den to tag a two-month-old cub before the mother tiger returns.
A female tiger charges up a tree, attempting to attack a hovering
helicopter. Team members race to revive a sedated tiger, even giving
it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. There are plenty of daring
adventures in this bold rescue effort. 60 minutes

Super
Cities: St. Petersburg - Travel Video .

Explore elegant St. Petersburg, built in
the early 18th Century as Russia's proud new capital. Conceived by Tsar
Peter the Great as a grandiose version of Amsterdam. The
architecture of St. Petersburg reflects a range of European influences.
Its beautiful palaces and quiet elegance belie its troubled history yet,
as you explore the city, you'll find clues to the political turmoil that
give St. Petersburg its haunting character. 30 minutes
Hello Arthur,
Thank you for sending the new St.
Petersburg video which arrived Friday. We viewed it last evening
and were absolutely delighted with this new addition to our video
library. Some of the footage was shot from a
plane so one viewing it really is able to see these gorgeous palaces and
landmarks from the best perspective. Other footage took us right
into the palaces and up close so that we felt that we were right there
marveling at the beauty once again. The narration is wonderful and the
coloring and quality is first rate. We highly recommend it! Thank you
for your efforts to help us remember our trip in such a perfect manner.
