Rick Steves'
Germany and Scandinavia 2000-2007
- Travel Video. DVD.
Seven
Shows: 3½ hours,
closed captioned, NTSC format, all region compatible.
Munich
and the Foothills of the Alps
— In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous
markets and go-for-Baroque palaces...while office workers surf in the
Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the
fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig and climb to the highest point
in Germany, the Zugspitz.
Then
we cross into the Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle.
Germany's
Romantic Rhine and Rothenburg
— Cruising the Rhine River, we dodge riverboat traffic and the legendary
Lorelei. After climbing castles and descending into dungeons, we relax
with Rhine wine. We tour Burg Eltz, a lived-in castle where the noble
lady still puts out fresh flowers. Then we enter the walled town of
Rothenburg for Germany's best wood carving, a vivid dose of medieval
punishment, and a tour with the night watchman of the town's lamp-lit
ramparts.
Germany's
Black Forest and Cologne
— Rick teams up with his wife and kids to appreciate the Gothic artistry
of Cologne's cathedral. Then it's time to enjoy the good life, dipping
into a classy mineral spa, trying our luck at a fancy casino, devouring
chocolate-cherry cake, and exploring Germany's most romantic forest.
Berlin:
Resilient, Reunited and Reborn
— Berlin is back, resuming its place as a great European capital. We
climb the Reichstag's new glass dome, sway at a modern-day cabaret, and
pop a few chocolates in the now thriving eastern sector. Along with
Germany's finest art, complicated Berlin also has hidden remnants of its
fascist and communist past. In a city that's rebounding and rebuilding,
we crane our necks at Potsdamer Platz, Europe's newest Times Square.
Copenhagen
and Aero — A
highlight of Scandinavia, Denmark's Copenhagen welcomes visitors with
remnants of Viking days, cosmopolitan flair and a high standard of
living. We join the locals — lunching, biking and then boating through
old Copenhagen. Our city tour ends in the world famous carnival, Tivoli
Gardens Amusement Park. For a glimpse of 17th century Denmark, we board
a train, then ferry to Aero Island where a bike ride among thatched
cottages, "snooping mirrors," and cobbled alleys reminds us of the world
of Hans Christian Andersen.
Oslo,
Bergen, and the Fjords
— We find that Norway's seafaring past lives on in Oslo as we boat
across the harbor and explore remnants of ocean adventure from Viking
Eric the Red to Thor Heyerdahl of Kon Tiki fame. The Nazi Resistance
Museum chronicles Norway's brave stance in World War II and a mammoth
ski jump beckons the super-skilled. We ride the scenic rails over
Norway's mountainous spine and cruise a fjord as part of the "Norway in
a Nutshell" route. Finally, in Bergen we stroll the Hanseatic quarter,
discovering links to the city's past.
Stockholm
and Helsinki — We
check out sleek Stockholm as an opener to a tour that winds up in
Helsinki, Finland. In Sweden's capitol, we browse in the old town, see
an opera at the baroque Queen's Theater, get close to an unlucky 17th
century warship and sample earlier centuries of Swedish life in a lively
open-air museum. Then we board a ship for a scenic overnight cruise
through the Baltic Archipelago to explore 19th century sights in modern
Helsinki, Finland.

Drottningholm Palace (Drottingholm Slott) Sweden
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
Drottningholm Castle is located on
“Queen’s Island” in the
Mälarsea,
12 kilometres from Stockholm. Of Franco-Dutch design, construction of
this regal residence began in 1662 and the castle is now the residence
of the Swedish royal family.
Lively influences that date back to the Baroque and Rococo periods are
part of the characteristic features of the spacious park that surrounds
the castle. A number of the sculptures and works of art that feature in
the garden were captured in various military campaigns. The cultural
elements of various epochs are also reflected in the general layout of
the park that is often referred to as the Swedish Versailles.
Drottingholm Castle has managed to retain the regal atmosphere of the
Swedish royal families just as it was during the 18th century.

Kina Slott (The Chinese Pavilion Drottningholm
Palace) Stockholm
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
Since 1981 the Baroque castle of
Drottningholm, situated
twelve
kilometres from Stockholm, has been the official residence of the
Swedish royal family. Within the beautiful Drottningholm Park is an
exceptional architectural jewel, Kina Slott, a picturesque Chinese
pleasure palace that is one of the most captivating examples of the
exotic world of the Far East as visualised by Sweden’s former
aristocracy.
After the Swedish East India Company first arrived in China in 1733
everything Chinese was highly fashionable. In each corner of Europe
numerous buildings were suddenly inspired by Chinese art and
architecture thus many tea-houses, pavilions and tiny pleasure palaces
became in vogue.
The pavilion still contains several valuable silk wallpapers, lacquered
umbrellas and other exotic examples. An exquisite collection of Chinese
porcelain is one of the most celebrated exhibits as porcelain played a
vital role in the dining hall where food arrived in quite spectacular
manner - the table rose up directly from the kitchen!
Considering such ingenuity it is understandable that Kina Slott
continues to enjoy much popularity right up to the present day.

Kungliga Slottet (Swedish Royal Palace) Stockholm,
Sweden
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
Kungliga Slottet is a majestic royal
castle that is located on the
highest
point of the island of Stadsholmen in the middle of the attractive
historical old town of Stockholm known as Gamla Stan. The castle became
an official royal residence when Swedish monarch, King Adolf Fredrik,
resided there.
With its 608 rooms the castle is considered to be one of the greatest
royal residences in the world and home to the Swedish crown jewels.
The design of the Royal castle and its splendid facade was created by
the architect, Nicodemus Tessin The Younger. His father, Nicodemus The
Elder, built the Tre Kronor Castle at the end of the 17th century which
was named after the three crowns that are depicted in the Swedish coat
of arms. In 1697 a devastating fire swept through Stockholm and also the
Tre Kronor Castle. Shortly after the fire, the castle of Kungliga
Slottet, designed in Italian Baroque style, rose up from the ruins of
Tre Kronor Castle.
For more than 250 years the cityscape of Sweden’s capital of Stockholm
would not have been complete without the splendour of Kungliga Slottet.

Storkyrkan Stockholm,
Sweden
- Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
The elegant tower of Storkyrkan Cathedral
rises majestically above
Gamla
Stan, the old and historic district of Sweden’s capital city of
Stockholm. Storkyrkan, which means, ‘the great church’, is the oldest
church in the Swedish metropolis.
The history of Stockholm’s cathedral, that combines both Gothic as well
as Baroque design, is closely associated with the Swedish royal family.
With the exception of King Gustav The Fifth, each of Sweden’s kings has
been crowned here due to the ideal setting offered by this glorious
building.
Storkyrkan was not only important to Sweden for its historic
architecture and remarkable works of art, it was also of much religious
significance as it was from here that Swedish reformer, Olaus Petri,
began to spread the Lutheran message across Sweden during the first half
of the 16th century.
The cathedral also contains the oldest remaining historical portrayal of
Stockholm and a strange phenomenon of light that once occurred in this
city was also the subject of this painting that dates back to 1535.
Storkyrkan is a religious building of much import with regard to the
development of the clerical world as well as to the history of Sweden.

Stockholm Sweden
- Travel Video. DVD.
Vista Point. 26 Minutes.
Stockholm is a
city that floats on water: the ‘Venice Of The North’
was built on
fourteen islands.
Gamla Stan, or ‘Old Town’, is the name of the city’s three central
islands that are linked by numerous bridges. Its ambience is that of the
Middle Ages and small and mysterious alleys and beautiful buildings that
date back to the 7th century characterise the life of the traders who
once lived there.
The old town’s most dominant building is the royal castle of Kunglia
Slottet. Larger than London’s Buckingham Palace it contains six hundred
and eight rooms.
The Stadshuset is one of the city’s landmarks and was designed in
Medieval style and with a tower that is almost 106 metres tall. The most
important artists of the time were engaged in the creation of the Blue
Hall in which the Noble Prize ceremony now takes place each year.
Those who appreciate museums will not be disappointed by Stockholm as it
boasts more than fifty! The National Museum located on the Strömmen
Canal contains countless works of art. Due to the passion for art of
various of Sweden’s royal family and also generous public donations, the
museum has a truly outstanding collection of French paintings that date
back to the 18th century.
Six kilometres south of Stockholm is a cemetery that has been designated
as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Skogskyrkogarden, the final
resting place for many of Stockholm’s past inhabitants and also some of
its most famous, including Greta Garbo. This extraordinary complex took
thirty years to build and is unique in the world.
Since 1998 this centuries-old Hanse city has also been the cultural
capital of Europe. This city of the Vikings is a true architectural gem!

The Woodland Cemetery Stockholm (SKOGSKYSKOGARDEN), Sweden
-
Travel Video. DVD.
Global Treasures.
10 Minutes.
Architecture and
nature unite in perfect harmony in
Skogskyrkogarden
Cemetery in the south of Stockholm. Its unique design is based on a
combination of fascinating elements. In 1993 this picturesque forest
cemetery was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.
Wild animals such as deer can be seen close to the gravestones thus
highlighting the natural and idyllic atmosphere of this unique place.
The tranquil forest that now extends over an old quarry remained mostly
untouched during the construction of the cemetery in the first half of
the 20th century.
The cemetery is also the final resting place of a number of famous
people such as legendary Hollywood actress Greta Garbo who was buried
here in 1999. Arranged in sections, most of the graves are located in a
tranquil pine forest. Thus the gravestones are as one with Nature, a
concept substantially influenced by the architecture of Asplund and
Lewerentz.
The modern, classical and natural elements of Skogskyrkogarden have
created a truly impressive and glorious monument.
