Passports

The easiest way to find the facility nearest to you where you can apply for a Passport, is to call or visit your local Post Office branch.  If they don't accept Passport applications at that location, they will be happy to give you a Passport application and refer you to the closest Post Office where you can make your official application.

Requirements:  Two passport photos size of 2"x2", usually available at photo shops that specialize in Passport photos (consult your Yellow Pages), or at some of the larger chain stores such as Savon.

Cost:  The normal cost for a Passport application is $60.00 for adults, and $40.00 for children 15 years of age or younger.

Time to process and application:  Approximately four weeks.  Apply as many months in advance as possible so that you don't have to worry about it at the last minute.  And remember, if you are also going to be applying for a Visa to any particular country, that will  take another 4-6 weeks.  Don't procrastinate.

Rush Orders:  The only solution for those passport seekers who wait until the last minute, is to make an appointment at the nearest official State Department Passport Office (located in many big cities) and request "expedited service".  Be prepared to sit around a waiting room crowded with other unfortunates waiting for the same service.  An extra expedited service fee of $35 will be added to your basic fee of $60.00.

Travelling with minors:  Check with the destination country's consulate for the definition of a "minor".  In Mexico, anyone under the age of 18 is considered a minor.  In Canada, a minor is anyone under the age of 16.  There are a number of American federal laws pertaining to travelling with minor children.  Check with your local Passport Office to learn which laws may pertain to your family.
