    Provence, France - Travel Video.
DVD. Vista Point. 26 Minutes. Marseille is the most important city in Provence and is situated on the south coast of France. From a distance, one of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour: the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. With abundant internal furnishings, Byzantine arches, golden mosaics and numerous votives it is a splendid structure inspired by Byzantine Romanic design. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the 5th century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe, Les Calanques, a unique nature reserve where shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Sur Le Pont D'Avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint B?n?zet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars! A place of radiant light and sweet aromas with villages that nestle in the rocks like eagles'nests and with cities that have an historic past. Provence is indeed a captivating land full of fascinating contrasts.

France A Musical Tour of the South of France - Travel Video.
DVD. Naxos Scenic Musical Journeys. 60 Minutes. The Places The Places The tour opens with views of the Camargue, the marshy region near Arles with its wild life. Views of the Côte d’Azur are intercut with glimpses of the Munich Glyptothek with its collections of Roman and Greek statuary. Near Arles is the ancient Abbey of Montmajour and the fortified monastery and Abbey on Saint-Honorat, one of the Iles de Lérins. In Arles we see the Roman theatre and necropolis and, at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the remains of the ancient Gallo-Greek town of Glanum. The Music Music for the tour includes Debussy’s evocative Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, two Gymnopédies by Erik Satie and Ravel’s two suites from his ballet Daphnis et Chloé, followed by his Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet.

France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany Night Music Vol. 1 - Travel Video.
DVD. Naxos Scenic Musical Journeys. 60 Minutes. The Places The Places Most of the places visited reflect a spirit of calm and tranquility, although the glimpse of Venice dwells briefly on carnival revellers. Other scenes range from the Bavarian Chiemsee and the Swiss Engadin to the marshy tracts of the Camargue in the South of France, with its wild horses. The Music The music matches the reflective mood of the scenes shown. Included are movements from Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik and Symphony No. 40, and from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, with Pachelbel’s ingenious Canon. From Tchaikovsky comes a Mélodie, a composition that formed part of a thank-you letter to his hostess and patron, whom he was never to meet face to face, and from Debussy the popular Clair de lune. The recording ends with Faure’s Sicilienne, familiar in so many forms and transcriptions.

Southern France A Musical Tour of Provence, Cote d'Azur and Camargue - Travel Video.
DVD. Naxos Scenic Musical Journeys. 60 Minutes. The Places Scenes of Provence, with its ancient Roman remains and ancestral traditions, mingle with the coast of the Cote d'Azur with its blue seas, rocks and islands, and the great nature reserve of Camargue, land of wild bulls and horses. The Music Chopin and Puccini may seem outsiders in a gathering of French musicians. The former, however, was the son of an emigre French father and spent the greater part of his life in Paris, while Puccini finds a place here with his transformation of the Abbe Prevost's novel Manon Lescaut into an immensely moving opera. Other composers reflect a French tradition ranging from Berlioz to Ravel.

    Champagne France - Travel Video.
DVD. Europe's Classic Romantic Inns. 30 Minutes. CHATEAU DE FERE The present chateau was once a wing of an original 13th century pleasure palace owned by the Governor-General of France. Manager Jo-Andrea Finck now hosts its modern equivalent, beautifully situated in its own 90-acre park, complete with ruins of the original main castle. The cuisine is a major attraction, as is the wine cellar with its impressive collection of 20,000 bottles of fine wines. LE CHEVAL BLANC Le Cheval Blanc, or White Horse, has been owned by the Robert family for five generations. It's been a haven of hospitality and fine dining since Napoleon's officers made it their unofficial headquarters. Bernard and Michele like taking visitor's to explore the countryside, especially in Bernard's antique car. Their son is a superb chef, and we watch him prepare a dish of crayfish boiled in - of course - champagne. CHATEAU D'ETOGES This 17th century moated castle was noted for the hospitality it offered French kings traveling east. Your gracious hostess, Anne Filliette-Neuville, extends this "noblesse oblige" tradition: all guests are treated like royalty. As Anne's ancestral home, she enjoys taking visitors on tours through the magnificent rooms and gardens with their natural spring fountains. Regional Highlights: Reims Cathedral This pinnacle of Gothic architecture dates from 1211 and is called the "Coronation Cathedral" because almost every French King since then was crowned here. It's adorned with 2000 statues, including the “Smiling Angel,” whose enigmatic smile draws comparisons to the Mona Lisa. Champagne, the Queen of Wine Claude Taittinger, the head of one of the last remaining family owned champagne houses, introduces us to the romance and elegance of this sparkling wine. In the family caves that were once roman chalk mines, he shows us the traditional techniques still used to make the festive drink, and how to properly open a bottle. Hot-air Ballooning A favorite way to tour the champagne region is by balloon, and we take you up to get a bird's eye view. We see why it's entirely fitting to open a bottle of the bubbly when we land- every flight is a real celebration. Cruising the Marne River We take a cruise down the peaceful Marne, enjoying the picturesque medieval villages and famous vineyards. Sip a glass of champagne and contemplate how life along the river flows as quietly as the sleepy stream itself.

    Bordeaux - Travel Video.
DVD. Europe's Classic Romantic Inns. 30 Minutes. ST. JAMES The strikingly modern hotel was built in a medieval vineyard overlooking the city of Bordeaux. Owner and chef Jean-Marie Amat is a true artist: The St. James features constantly changing art exhibits, avant-guard rooms (one has a real Harley-Davidson motorcycle in it) and innovative cuisine that earned Jean-Marie a Michelin star. He shares an easy Mediterranean recipe with us. CHATEAU CORDELLION-BAGES Originally a wine-growing chateau in the village of Pauillac, the elegant inn now caters to guests exploring the nearby great vineyards. The Bordeaux Wine School is based here, and we attend a class to learn some expert tasting techniques. Owner Sylvie Cazes takes us to her family's nearby winery, Chateau Lynch-Bages, for a closer look at wine-making, and later to a concert at the Grand Theatre in Bordeaux. CHATEAU DU FOULON The 19th century manor is the family home of the hospitable Vicomte and Vicomtesse Jean and Danielle Baritault. The couple enjoy sharing its splendid natural setting, complete with peacocks, swans and a 100-acre forest. The Vicomte and his wife take us to see one of the nearby wilderness reserves and the magnificent white sand coastline, an increasingly popular alternative to the crowded Riveria. Regional Highlights: The City of Bordeaux When France was the most powerful nation in Europe, Bordeaux was its great port. The city transformed itself into a magnificent 18th century jewel. We tour the historical center, and visit the Grand Theatre, a world class example of neo-classical architecture. Medoc Wines Bordeaux red wines are considered the world's best, and many come from its Medoc region. Jean-Marie Cazes, the "Baron of Bordeaux", has revolutionized the wine business, building up a small empire of 12 great estates by using advanced scientific methods to perfect the wine-making art. He shows us a few of his secrets, and explains why great Bordeaux wines often reach their peak after 50 years in a bottle. Taming Nature Huge sections of Bordeaux were uninhabitable until the 1700's, when a engineer named Bermontier persuaded the government to fight the swamps and sand by planting trees. The 100 year project was enormously successful, and the man-made forest is now the largest in Europe. We visit a newly reforested area , and learn that Bordeaux earns more money selling wood products each year than it does selling wine. Arcachon Oysters Most French oysters are grown in the Archachon Bay, although oyster farmers produce so many they've run out of room to raise them and three-quarters of their young are sold to other regions. We go out with an oyster farmer and experience a delicious new kind of tourism-tasting oysters just as they're pulled from the icy waters.

France A Musical Tour of Provence - Travel Video.
DVD. Naxos Scenic Musical Journeys. 60 Minutes. The Places The region of southern France known as Provence has enjoyed a varied history, occupied by Ligurian and Celtic tribes, followed by Greek settlers, and finally by absorption into the Roman Empire. The succeeding centuries brought invasions, then rule by the Counts of Toulouse, before the region became, by inheritance, part of France. The local language, the langue d'oc, reflects something of this history, as do surviving popular customs. The Roman period is represented by surviving buildings, the Middle Ages by the Romanesque and Gothic. The Music Music for the tour consists of string quartets by Claude Debussy and by Maurice Ravel, thirteen years his junior. Debussy's String Quartet, Op. 10, dates from 1893, while Ravel's single string quartet was written in 1902. Both works are highly characteristic of their relative composers.

France Brittany & Normandy - Travel Video.
DVD. Naxos Scenic Musical Journeys. 60 Minutes. The Places Brittany and Normandy, one Celtic in origin, culture and language, the other taking its name from the conquering Norsemen, have an enchantment all their own. The landscape, tinged by the magic of history, the ancient buildings and, above all, the sea, combine to offer an unforgettable panorama of the two regions. The French composer Claude Debussy suggested new paths for the future, introducing innovations in harmony, structure and orchestral colouring, the last often with a large orchestra delicately used. The Music The music used here includes the evocative Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, later transformed into a ballet by Nijinsky, the three Nocturnes, orchestral pieces that again suggest the beauty and variety of the landscapes and views of the sea that they here accompany, and finally La mer, in all its changes from dawn to dusk.
