The emphasis is on spoken Brazilian, distinguishing the nasal and the non-nasal vowels. There are dialogs of natural, everyday conversations between native speakers, emphasizing the difference between Brazilian spelling and speech. The dialogs for memorization are presented in three steps: pronunciation, fluency, and participation. At the end of each recorded lesson unit in volume 1, a brief "culture capsule" in English provides insight into the customs and language usage of native speakers. This is a course well-designed for the serious student who really wants to learn the Brazilian language.
